For Yonoh, a Spain-based studio, to think out of the box means to think of a box. That’s why they created “Box”, a toilet project that sees the room as… yes, you’ve got it, as a box.

Their initiative was a finalist in the 100% Design London, within the frame of the Roca Jump the Gap contest.
So what’s the idea of “Box”? It is a modular bathroom system made from several parts. This means you can add and remove parts according to your needs.

For example, the parts include one for a watercloset and wash-basin, another containing the shower, a small seat and two shelves with towel racks. An additional part can be used to enlarge the room and to store stuff.
A friendly feature of this bathroom is its water usage system. After you used water in the shower or in the wash-basin, it is stored in the used water tank to supply the watercloset cistern.
Another cool feature is the faucet controls. All of them are electronic and inform you of the temperature and quantity of the water which has been exhausted.
In addition, water is warmed by a therm bomb, which uses the humid air for this purpose. Even the stay is warmed by this bomb!
These three features are designed to create an eco-friendly bathroom, but who doubts, they make the user experience much more comfortable and easier.
The bathroom was presented as an independent unit, as you can see in the pictures. However, its independence is limited, since it needs water and electricity intake to work.
Its modules are its basic unit, and you can add and remove some of them as you want. However, it may be not as easy, since each module is a metallic hollow structure that houses the water tanks, sanitary and electrical facilities. So I guess before you remove any part of The Box, you should contact one of its designers.

Despite its limitations, the “Box” seems to be a great idea to replace those disgusting chemical toilets you find here and there in public spaces… and to improve the ecological performance!
