Forbidden Fractals

The Autumn harvest is sneaking upon us. With it comes luscious fresh fruit, ripe for the picking. How closely food is associated with temptation … especially the forbidden fruit.

Three religions in the world share the same story, the story of the first man and woman breaking the only commandment they had – to not eat of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. They gave into temptation and ate the forbidden fruit.

There is debate on which fruit exactly this was. Popular culture believes it was the apple, but it is unlikely. More reasonable options point to the quince, the fig, and the pomegranate. Whichever it may be, it has inspired brilliant works of art throughout the ages.

Forbidden fruit in fractal art – an art form considered by some to be no more than a jumbled mess, and a fruit intended to be off limits. The two, combined, create a deadly combination of tempting, teasing images.

Below you’ll find fractals based off of the form of a pomegranate, an apple, and figs. See if you can differentiate between the graphics and determine which fruit is depicted. Each image will link you to the original image source of the artist.
